On “Keep Me From Harm”:
Even as far back as Should The World Fail To Fall Apart I involved some Turkish musicians. I actually did integrate some actual Turkish elements — literally Middle Eastern elements musically — even as late as Holy Smoke on “Keep Me From Harm.” There are nay playing, and there are darabouka and Middle Eastern instruments actually play live on those sessions. Being so close to the traditional source of that music, that work, that particular ethnic configuration of music, you realize that you are so close to the tradition of that music source that you realize that you are using it in a way that is sort of arbitrary — almost like grafting on in a way that almost cheapens it. It takes it away from the traditional integrity of that music. So there isn’t a conscious element there at all.
